This peaceful island today drives us through its historical buildings to its past intense history. T oday, Changuu Private Island Paradise has restored these historical buildings to make them living structures, adapted to new uses while preserving their authenticity. The Prison ruins have now been converted into a bright living structure, offering a host of entertainment facilities, such as a café, boutique and library. The Mathews’ Restaurant is an artfully restored building that was erected in the late 1890s; its wide veranda, enjoying the invigorating sea breeze, overlooks the irresistible swimming-pool at which fresh water is available for the first time in the history of this islet. This awesome renovation has been achieved whilst maintaining the perfect balance between nature and culture.
For the most romantic breakaway, the 15 exclusive cottages built in the north-west of the island offer an unrivalled, luxurious experience; and in the south-west side of the island, the former Quarantine Area built in 1931 has been converted into 12 elegant sea facing rooms.
Only the ancient Giant Tortoises that inhabit the island, brought from Seychelles almost one century ago, are witnesses of the most private and exclusive experience.

Activities

Wildlife
Changuu is a tropical island enjoying warm weather at most times, with a mean high temperature of 36 degrees Celsius from December to March, and a mean low temperature of 21 degrees Celsius July and August.
It is a coral islet lying approximately 6 meters above the high tide mark, consisting of coral rag and lying on a coral reef, much of which is exposed at low tide. In the healthy corals, excellent varieties of coral fish are found.
All over the island, there are a number of coral pits, which are disused quarries from digging coral for building on Zanzibar Stone Town along the centuries. One large quarry site at the back side of the island is used as a natural swimming pool at which it is not unusual to swim with Green and Hawksbill sea turtles.
There are extensive areas of coral rag bush and indigenous tropical forest, which is interspersed with large variety of exotic trees. In the central part of the island, the thick covering of indigenous forest is host of introduced species of flora such as Indian Almond, Papaya, Citrus and Frangipani, scattered among the numerous indigenous trees. Some of salt marsh species such as mangrove forest are found at the southern part of the island.
The existence of coral rag bush has got a very significant importance to bare a wide variety of birds, colourful peacocks, bats, butterfly and a good variety of insects, with some duikers.
Separate mention, given its importance, deserves the community of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, a species endemic to the Aldabra archipelago in Seychelles, that inhabit Changuu Island since the 1920s. Initially, 4 tortoises came as a gift of the Seychelles Government to the Government of Zanzibar, and the community has grown until become made of over 100 individuals. Today, the Save the Tortoises foundation secures their welfare at the Tortoise Sanctuary.

Prison Island offers two room categories, all in close proximity to the sea.
15 exclusive deluxe cottages are located in the north-west side of the island, discretely distributed along the sea-line, affording maximum privacy and seclusion.
The cottages are built in local materials and topped with traditional thatched roofs, achieving cool atmosphere day and night.
The spacious interiors are elegantly decorated and equipped with mosquito nets and ensuite bathrooms, all with 2 al fresco showers and bathtub.
The private outdoor verandas face out to the sea, maximizing the views and sounds of the Ocean.
In the south-west side of the island, the former Quarantine Area built in 1931 has been converted into 12 elegant standard sea facing rooms that afford the most fantastic views of Stone Town, all of them ensuite with shower equipments and mosquito nets.

How to get to the hotel? |
|
Changuu Private Island Paradise ( Prison Island) has been described as a Small Paradise on Earth, with its private white beach surrounded by the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean. The islet lies 3 ½ miles to the northwest of Zanzibar’ Stone Town, and it is oblong in shape about ½ mile and 250 yards broad at the broadest part. Getting there after a comfortable 20 minutes’ boat drive from Stone Town by a traditional Dhow (fishing boat) takes you to the mostunique experience in life.

Cancellation Policy
-If cancellation is received 32 days or more prior to arrival, then a 70% of the full amount will be lost.
-Cancellations received 31 days or less will result in the full amount being charged as a cancellation fee.
-No shows will result on the full amount being charged as a cancellation fee.
Children Policy
-Children under the age of 16 are not allowed in this hotel.

Price & Payment
Unless otherwise stated, at the time of booking only a deposit is due. The remanining balance is payable on check-in and charged by the hotel direct. hotel-savings.com accepts Visa, Mastercard & American Express.
For security purposes, should your reservation incur a charge in excess of USD 400.00, you must submit a signed credit card authorization form. This will be supplied upon confirmation of the reservation. If you fail to fax across this documentation within 48 hours, we reserve the right to cancel the reservation. Please note that as per our cancellation policy, there may be a fee for this.
Flight Information
If you are to arrive at your hotel after 5pm, please provide Hotelrentalgroup with your flight information, so that we may be able to advise the hotel of what time they can expect you. Should your flight be delayed, we strongly recommend that you contact the hotel directly to inform them of this.
Period of Stay / Rate Calculation
All stays are calculated and sold "per night". We can only guarantee a room until noon (12pm). Late check-outs can be requested at the moment of reservation in the additional comments box, but may come at an additional fee (usually 50% of the nightly rate).
Cancellation Policies & Charges
Cancellations must be received in writing by e-mail, with as much notice as possible. Penalty fees may apply. Please check the terms & conditions, as these policies vary from hotel to hotel.

No Shows
No Shows will result in a 100% penalty fee.
Reservation & Confirmation
All reservations made on the web sites operated by hotel-savings.com will receive a temporary confirmation number. This temporary number does not mean that the hotel room is available and is only for administrative purposes. Your final confirmation will be sent to you on your official confirmation voucher within 24 hours, unless, due to unforeseen circumstances, the hotel does not get back to us within this time frame. hotel-savings.com is not responsible for any such delays.
Early departures
In addition to the standard cancellation policy, we would like to stress the point that the hotels are very strict regarding changes to the length of clients’ stays. Therefore we would like to inform you that clients departing before their booked check out date will be charged for the remaining nights and, no being made for unused nights.
Check In & Check Out Policy
Your room will be made available to you from 14h00 (unless stated otherwise in the terms & conditions of the hotel). Should you require a guaranteed early check in, the room must be booked and paid for in full for the day preceeding your stay.
Check out time is 12:00 hrs. For a guaranteed late check-out, clients should book for an additional night, charged at 100%.
